NeoFur is a real-time fur plugin for Unity that uses the latest in compute shader technology for physics and drawing, and physically-based rendering for lighting and shading. In this talk, a behind-the-scenes look of how the technology works is coupled with a practical look at how at easy it is to use in production.

Really nice job keep it up but do give us some of the insight of the internal complexities of the system that you faced while it was being developed. Anyways 10/10 🙂

+Carl Binneman the product is live for Unreal and Unity right now… and is graphics card agnostic! Our Unity version is also 20% for a limited time. www.neoglyphic.com/neofur

Yeah we're looking at a few different solutions including shells, splines, cards and particle systems and all the combinations… we'll try to start blogging about our development progress to see what you all think as we go

I hope to see this eventually work for long hair… and I am sure it is less expensive performance wise then nVidia Gamehair and Tress FX

Hey Kashif – yes you can use it for short hair and stubble. It's not suited for long, styled hair as that is a completely different kettle of fish (although we're trying a few things there too!)

Noice! but is it hardware limited?

Nope. Graphics card agnostic for development. For target platforms, we have also put a lot of effort into both CPU and GPU simulation, so it works down to mobile devices. Obviously implementation needs to change depending on target hardware, just like anything… but the plugin itself will run on whatever card you have for development.

This looks so fucking cool! Never thought anything like this was possible at this detail and performance. Can't wait to play around with this and implement this into my games!

its things like this that will push the graphics in games. not nvidia version because they lock it to there hardware. also could something like this be used as a grass shader?

Oh, and other best practice is to try and section your ground geo mesh into smaller sections… using one giant mesh won't get results you want with our LOD systems. Doing that will get both great looking and performant grass.

We have seen a few customers try it for grass and had fairly good results… Depends on the implementation, just gotta make sure you configure our LOD systems right so you don't smack perf too hard.
